Dawki: The Crystal Clear River of India

There are rivers, and then there is the Umngot — better known by the name of the town it flows through: Dawki. Situated on the India-Bangladesh border in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, the Umngot river has earned global recognition for water so extraordinarily clear that boats appear to float in mid-air above the riverbed.

The transparency of the Umngot is not a digital illusion or a photographer’s trick. The riverbed of smooth boulders and pebbles is fully visible from the surface, making every boat look like a levitating vessel in a dream. This remarkable clarity is attributed to the minimal human settlement and industrial activity upstream, and to the efforts of local communities who have fiercely protected the river’s ecosystem for generations.

Boating on the Umngot is the highlight of any visit. Wooden rowing boats are available for hire at the riverbank, and gliding silently over the translucent water — watching fish dart between submerged rocks — is an experience that feels almost surreal. The season from November to May offers the clearest views; monsoon rains bring muddy sediment that briefly clouds the water.

The town of Dawki also serves as a border crossing point to Bangladesh, and visitors can watch loaded trucks cross the iconic single-lane suspension bridge that spans the river. The contrast of this workaday activity against the surreal beauty of the water below is quintessentially Meghalayan.

The surrounding hills are draped in pine and bamboo, and the drive from Shillong — about two and a half hours — winds through some of the most scenic mountain roads in the North-East. Make time for Shnongpdeng village nearby, where adventure sports like zip-lining, cliff jumping, and snorkelling in the crystal water await.
